Convocation is being held this week, Thursday, October 19, in two daytime
sessions, one at 10 a.m. and the other at 3 p.m.

Henry Friesen, former president of the Medical Research Council
of Canada (now known as the Canadian Institutes for Health Research),
will be named as distinguished professor emeritus.

Dr. Friesen, who is returning to Manitoba following his term as
president of the Medical Research Council of Canada which he transformed
into a new organization, the Canadian Institutes for Health Research, will
be named distinguished professor emeritus. Dr. Friesen, who graduated
in medicine in 1958, was head of the department of physiology in the
Faculty of Medicine and a university distinguished professor before
his appointment to the MRC in 1991.

Pawan K. Singal has been appointed associate dean (academic) in the
Faculty of Graduate Studies. Singal is a professor in physiology where his
teaching has been centered on cardiovascular and cell physiology at the
graduate level. He joined the university as a research associate in 1977.
In 1998 he was a recipient of an UMSU Students' Teacher Recognition Award.
His research is focused on the structure-function relationships of
heart in health and disease. Singal is currently the director of education
programs for the International Academy of Cardiovascular Sciences and has
received numerous awards for his research including the Mario Toppo
distinguished scientist award from the Association of Scientists of Indian
origin in America in 1999. Singal recently spoke at the sixth world congress
of the International Society for Adaptive Medicine in Lyon, France.
